Tony, the kids and I spent a gorgeous day at the KC Zoo today. We did absolutely everything. We watched the Sea Lion show, rode the train, fed the sheep, took a boat ride and much, much more! Here are some pics:

A Girls Day Out...

Holly, my Mom and I spent a fantastic girls day together. We picked up my Mom and went to lunch at the Corner Cafe in Blue Springs(fabulous home cooked food by the way. I'm still stuffed!). Then we headed over to Independence Center and did some serious shopping. The Children's Place was having a huge sale and Holly got a bunch of really cute new clothes and flip-flops. Then we headed over to Claire's and Holly got her ears pierced! She did fantastic. She didn't cry or scream at all (which is what I was totally expecting...lol). They did both ears at the same time and she said "Owe, that didn't hurt." LOL!! Then she and Grandma rode the Carousel together and we got cookies before we left. Then it was off to JC Penny's because Grandma wanted to buy Holly some pretty earrings for when the starters can come out. She got the cutest pair of gold teddy bear earrings and the tummies are diamonds! She can't wait to get to wear them. It was a long day, but a very exciting one.

Holly Update...

Holly, I'm happy to say, is doing much better. The antibiotic is doing the trick. Her knee is healing quite nicely. She will probably have a scar, but since she is still so little it will probably shrink in size as she grows. Now I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that the medicine doesn't turn her teeth grey because she has 2 permanant teeth coming in. We'll just have to wait and see.

WARNING to all Parents!

I like to think of myself as a fairly intelligent parent that knows what to do in most situations, but I had something occur today that I have had no experience with and I know that I wouldn't have reacted the way I did without some pushing from the school Nurse.

Holly scraped her knee on the driveway on Saturday afternoon while riding her scooter. Tony and I didn't think twice about it. We brought her in the house, cleaned it out good with Hydrogen Peroxide and put some Neosporin and a band aid on it. I gave her a bath last night and I noticed a tiny bit of redness around the scrape, but nothing to get excited about. Well the school Nurse called today because Holly came in and complained that her leg was really hurting. The Nurse took off the band aid (which I did not change this morning since I just cleaned it thoroughly last night) and discovered a pretty nasty sight.

The scrape was oozing puss and the redness had spread to a 5cm diameter around the scrape. She strongly urged me to take her to the ER and have a Doctor look at it. I really didn't think after talking to her that the ER was necessary for a simple scrape, so I called her Pediatrician and talked to him. I described what the school Nurse had told me and he said that it was my call. So just to be safe, because the school Nurse was quite adamant about me taking her to the ER, I picked her up from school and took her to St. Luke's South.

Boy am I glad I did! After a long 2 hour wait, the Doctor finally came over and looked at her knee. And let me just say that I felt absolutely ridiculous taking my daughter to the ER for a scraped knee. He swabbed some of the puss that was oozing out and they cultured it. Come to find out, she has Methicillin - Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA)or more commonly known as a Staph Infection under the skin. The ER Doctor said we were lucky to bring her in when we did because of the location of the scrape (on her knee). When an infection like this occurs near a major bone joint it will cause serious long lasting injuries and could have hospitalized her for several days.

This infection popped up in less than 12 hours
, so please, please, please watch your kids scrapes closely and change the dressing several times per day. This could have turned out much worse than it did, but thanks to the persistence of the school Nurse we caught it in time. She is now on a high dose of antibiotic for the next 7 days and has to go to her Pediatrician on Wednesday for a follow-up visit.

Happy Cinco De Mayo!

Yesterday was the favorite Mexican holiday that gives us all an excuse to go drink after work. Tony went out with the guys from the shop and I took the kids to Barnes & Noble and to Applebee's for dinner. We had a good time, but when we got home I found Tony sprawled out on the bed. He looked about 9 months pregnant...lol. He proceeded to inform me that he participated in a Taco eating contest at Habenero's. They had 5 minutes to eat as many X-Large tacos as they could. Tony wolfed down 7 of them and wound up in a 3-way tie. So for the tie-breaker, they brought out large bowls of fried ice cream and the first person to finish won the $100. Tony came in second only getting beat by a couple of bites. But they did give him a t-shirt and this hat. I have a feeling he is going to be in a lot of pain today (if you know what I mean...lol!).
